Do you just take pictures off your camera and upload them straight onto DA? (Or rather, do you have anything like Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, or Corel Photopaint?)

No, I make them smaller. I use photoshop.

When saving the picture, use "Save as Web Image" (I think that's what it's called?) and make it a high quality JPEG (quality >75; you won't need to change the size). That way, you can still keep it nice and big, but the file size would be easier for others to download. The image should look the same, but be much better compressed.
